Then the Khmer Rouge Came is a memoir of first hand accounts we collected from 2015 to 2017 of the impact of the Khmer Rouge on the lives of ordinary people in Northwest Cambodia. The book gives voice to a section of the population that remains largely unheard in memoirs on the Pol Pot period and aims to bridge the gap between the impression gained by visitors to Angkor Wat and the reality for many Cambodian people. It sets out how the book came into being and gives a taste of what it is like to build a relationship with people in a distant country who are so different from yourself and yet so similar.
