Le Tour de Coddenham this week featured the dreaded time trial, Contre la Montre. Riders depart at intervals with the Maillot Jaune going last so, with nobody around, he set off. Forecast wind and rain led race organisers to consider calling off the stage but the intrepid riders insisted they were not made of sugar. The conditions meant the customary cheering crowds thronging the route were very much reduced. Passing a ‘Woodland For Sale’ sign, he was sorely tempted to stop and buy a plot but couldn’t face the socially distanced queueing, and it was chucking it down. Maybe some other time. The leader was seen to stop at la Pharmacie de Clef-don to collect drugs. He later claimed they were prescribed by his GP, were not performance enhancing, and were sanctioned by the Fédération Cyclisme de Coddenham. But he would say that wouldn’t he? Central Suffolk Anti Doping Agency are investigating. Despite interruptions, a treacherous road surface with vicious headwinds and crosswinds, the leader posted the best time, as the Peleton yet again opted to stay home and do her Pilates.
